Eocene magmatism in the Himalaya: Response to lithospheric flexure during early Indian collision?

چکیده

Abstract Eocene mafic magmatism in the Himalaya provides a crucial window for probing evolution of crustal anatexis processes within lower plate collisional orogen. We report geochemical data from earliest postcollision ocean-island basalt–like dikes intruding Tethyan near northern edge colliding Indian plate. These occurred coeval, and spatially overlap, with granitoids cores gneiss domes were likely derived interaction between melts lithosphere-asthenosphere boundary continental lithosphere. propose that these magmas emplaced along lithospheric fractures response to flexure during initial subduction continent underplating such resulted orogen-parallel continent. This mechanism can explain formation coeval geologic orogen on both sides suture zone.

Far-field lithospheric deformation in Tibet during continental collision

[1] Crustal deformation along the present-day northern margin of the Tibetan Plateau has occurred since mid to late Eocene time, soon after India collided with Eurasia. Assuming that on these distance and time scales the lithosphere can be approximated using a thin viscous sheet, we show that far-field lithospheric deformation caused by an indenting boundary is expected to start shortly after c...

In the Case of Maden Complex, Geochemical Constraints on the Origin and Tectonic Implication of Eocene Magmatism in SE Turkey

The origin and geodynamic setting of the Maden Complex, which is situated in the Bitlis–Zagros Suture Zone in the Southeast Anatolian Orogenic Belt, is still controversial due to lack of systematic geological and geochemical data. Here we present new whole rock major–trace–rare earth element data from the Middle Eocene volcanic rocks exposed in Maden Complex and discuss their origin in the ligh...

Volcanism in response to plate flexure.

Volcanism on Earth is known to occur in three tectonic settings: divergent plate boundaries (such as mid-ocean ridges), convergent plate boundaries (such as island arcs), and hot spots. We report volcanism on the 135 million-year-old Pacific Plate not belonging to any of these categories. Small alkalic volcanoes form from small percent melts and originate in the asthenosphere, as implied by the...

Oceanic mafic magmatism in the Siletz terrane, NW North America: Fragments of an Eocene oceanic plateau?

Article history: Received 11 October 2016 Accepted 5 January 2017 Available online 14 January 2017 The Siletz terrane, a predominantly mafic accreted oceanic terrane, is located in the Cascadia forearc region of Oregon, Washington and Vancouver Island. The terrane represents a late Palaeocene–Eocene large igneous province that consists of pillow lavas, massive flows and intrusive sheets. Previo...
